Top 10 Food Additives to Avoid

by Laurentine ten Bosch, Producer - 'Food Matters'

Food additives have been used for centuries to enhance the appearance and flavor of food and prolong shelf life. But do these food additives really “add” any value to your food?

Food additives find their way into our foods to help ease processing, packaging and storage. But how do we know what food additives is in that box of macaroni and cheese and why does it have such a long shelf life?

A typical American household spends about 90 percent of their food budget on processed foods, and are in doing so exposed to a plethora of artificial food additives, many of which can cause dire consequences to your health.

Some food additives are worse than others. Here’s a list of the top food additives to avoid:

1. Artificial Sweeteners

Aspartame, (E951) more popularly known as Nutrasweet and Equal, is found in foods labeled "diet" or "sugar free". Aspartame is believed to be carcinogenic and accounts for more reports of adverse reactions than all other foods and food additives combined. Aspartame is not your friend. Aspartame is a neurotoxin and carcinogen. Known to erode intelligence and affect short-term memory, the components of this toxic sweetener may lead to a wide variety of ailments including brain tumor, diseases like lymphoma, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue, emotional disorders like depression and anxiety attacks, dizziness, headaches, nausea, mental confusion, migraines and seizures. Acesulfame-K, a relatively new artificial sweetener found in baking goods, gum and gelatin, has not been thoroughly tested and has been linked to kidney tumors. Read more about the dangers of Aspartame here.

Found in: diet or sugar free sodas, diet coke, coke zero, jello (and over gelatins), desserts, sugar free gum, drink mixes, baking goods, table top sweeteners, cereal, breathmints, pudding, kool-aid, ice tea, chewable vitamins, toothpaste

2. High Fructose Corn Syrup

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a highly-refined artificial sweetener which has become the number one source of calories in America. It is found in almost all processed foods. HFCS packs on the pounds faster than any other ingredient, increases your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels, and contributes to the development of diabetes and tissue damage, among other harmful effects.

Found in: most processed foods, breads, candy, flavored yogurts, salad dressings, canned vegetables, cereals

3. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG / E621)

MSG is an amino acid used as a flavor enhancer in soups, salad dressings, chips, frozen entrees, and many restaurant foods. MSG is known as an excitotoxin, a substance which overexcites cells to the point of damage or death. Studies show that regular consumption of MSG may result in adverse side effects which include depression, disorientation, eye damage, fatigue, headaches, and obesity. MSG effects the neurological pathways of the brain and disengaged the "I'm full" function which explains the effects of weight gain.

Found in: Chinese food (Chinese Restaurant Syndrome ) many snacks, chips, cookies, seasonings, most Campbell Soup products, frozen dinners, lunch meats

4. Trans Fat

Trans fat is used to enhance and extend the shelf life of food products and is among the most dangerous substances that you can consume. Found in deep-fried fast foods and certain processed foods made with margarine or partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, trans fats are formed by a process called hydrogenation. Numerous studies show that trans fat increases LDL cholesterol levels while decreasing HDL (“good”) cholesterol, increases the risk of heart attacks, heart disease and strokes, and contributes to increased inflammation, diabetes and other health problems. Oils and fat are now forbidden on the Danish market if they contain trans fatty acids exceeding 2 per cent, a move that effectively bans partially hydrogenated oils.

Found in: margarine, chips and crackers, baked goods, fast foods

5. Common Food Dyes

Studies show that artificial colorings which are found in soda, fruit juices and salad dressings, may contribute to behavioral problems in children and lead to a significant reduction in IQ. Animal studies have linked other food colorings to cancer. Watch out for these ones:

Blue #1 and Blue #2 (E133)

Banned in Norway, Finland and France. May cause chromosomal damage

Found in: candy, cereal, soft drinks, sports drinks and pet foods

Red dye # 3 (also Red #40 – a more current dye) (E124)

Banned in 1990 after 8 years of debate from use in many foods and cosmetics. This dye continues to be on the market until supplies run out! Has been proven to cause thyroid cancer and chromosomal damage in laboratory animals, may also interfere with brain-nerve transmission

Found in: fruit cocktail, maraschino cherries, cherry pie mix, ice cream, candy, bakery products and more!

Yellow #6 (E110) and Yellow Tartrazine (E102)

Banned in Norway and Sweden. Increases the number of kidney and adrenal gland tumors in laboratory animals, may cause chromosomal damage.

Found in: American cheese, macaroni and cheese, candy and carbonated beverages, lemonade and more!

6. Sodium Sulfite (E221)

Preservative used in wine-making and other processed foods. According to the FDA, approximately one in 100 people is sensitive to sulfites in food. The majority of these individuals are asthmatic, suggesting a link between asthma and sulfites. Individuals who are sulfite sensitive may experience headaches, breathing problems, and rashes. In severe cases, sulfites can actually cause death by closing down the airway altogether, leading to cardiac arrest.

Found in: Wine and dried fruit

7. Sodium Nitrate/Sodium Nitrite

Sodium nitrate (or sodium nitrite) is used as a preservative, coloring and flavoring in bacon, ham, hot dogs, luncheon meats, corned beef, smoked fish and other processed meats. This ingredient, which sounds harmless, is actually highly carcinogenic once it enters the human digestive system. There, it forms a variety of nitrosamine compounds that enter the bloodstream and wreak havoc with a number of internal organs: the liver and pancreas in particular. Sodium nitrite is widely regarded as a toxic ingredient, and the USDA actually tried to ban this additive in the 1970's but was vetoed by food manufacturers who complained they had no alternative for preserving packaged meat products. Why does the industry still use it? Simple: this chemical just happens to turn meats bright red. It's actually a color fixer, and it makes old, dead meats appear fresh and vibrant.

Found in: hotdogs, bacon, ham, luncheon meat, cured meats, corned beef, smoked fish or any other type of processed meat

8. BHA and BHT (E320)

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydrozyttoluene (BHT) are preservatives found in cereals, chewing gum, potato chips, and vegetable oils. This common preservative keeps foods from changing color, changing flavor or becoming rancid. Effects the neurological system of the brain, alters behavior and has potential to cause cancer. BHA and BHT are oxidants which form cancer-causing reactive compounds in your body.

Found in: Potato chips, gum, cereal, frozen sausages, enriched rice, lard, shortening, candy, jello

9. Sulfur Dioxide (E220)

Sulfur additives are toxic and in the United States of America, the Federal Drugs Administration have prohibited their use on raw fruit and vegetables. Adverse reactions include: bronchial problems particularly in those prone to asthma, hypotension (low blood pressure), flushing tingling sensations or anaphylactic shock. It also destroys vitamins B1 and E. Not recommended for consumption by children. The International Labour Organization says to avoid E220 if you suffer from conjunctivitis, bronchitis, emphysema, bronchial asthma, or cardiovascular disease.

Found in: beer, soft drinks, dried fruit, juices, cordials, wine, vinegar, and potato products.

10. Potassium Bromate

An additive used to increase volume in some white flour, breads, and rolls, potassium bromate is known to cause cancer in animals. Even small amounts in bread can create problems for humans.

Found in: breads

As Micheal Pollan says 2 you should never have anything in your food that you would not have in your pantry.. eg bags of artifical colours, flavourr enhancers, binders, free flow agents etc etc.

once you get rid of all the numbers, food just tastes so much better...we always avoid food with 621 or 951 (artificial sweeteners) now - sometimes hard with 220 (preservative) because of the wine!
Adam commented on 24-Nov-2010 08:14 PM5 out of 5 stars
How about just not buying foods that come in packaging? Then all you have to worry about are the pesticides and fertilizers! Easy huh?
jax commented on 24-Nov-2010 08:34 PM5 out of 5 stars
Easier than you think to avoid all the nasties!
It takes a little time (to read all those labels) but it's very rewarding - you get to appreciate REAL food (organic if possible)and not the over processed packaged junk that they would have us believe is real food. It's not!

I see dried fruits in health food stores here in Oz that are obviously treated with sulphur dioxide. Who the hell can you trust?
Anonymous commented on 24-Nov-2010 08:57 PM5 out of 5 stars
Good to know what to avoid, but is there a list of alternatives. I am trying to be better at all of this, but I want to have options too. Anyone have a 'good' list?
LF commented on 24-Nov-2010 10:03 PM5 out of 5 stars
Hey Anon about alternative lists: If you go to Whole Foods or Trader Joes or any natural health store, you will find packaged foods that are convenient but without any of the top ten additives to avoid. For instance, lunchmeat is better from Wholefoods since they use alternative ways to "preserve" but lunchmeat is still lunchmeat & not to have it everyday. If you don't have real lemons to make lemonade, they have natural drink mixes or drinks made up that doesn't have HFCS or dyes in it. If you like a "PopTart" once in a while, the healthy stores have a similar version w/o the bad stuff in it. You end up spending more which is hard on the budget but worth choosing carefully for your health & future health.
jenn commented on 24-Nov-2010 10:36 PM5 out of 5 stars
I'm with Adam...stick to the good stuff! If I don't know what I'm reading on the label then I certainly don't want to ingest it. I've found a local co-op grocery that I trust and they are helpful with finding alternatives. Switching to an organic (and mostly raw) diet has changed my life tremendously! Man, I feel good!!!!
Ann commented on 24-Nov-2010 11:59 PM5 out of 5 stars
It's not so hard when you grow & process/dry/can your own food. Then you know what's going in. You control the fertilizers and insecticides. Great weight control when one avoids foods with all these additives!
TM commented on 25-Nov-2010 12:05 AM5 out of 5 stars
Thanks for sharing this great list. I already know about most of them and eat a 90% organic diet. Bumming about the wine though....guess it's time to seek out some good organic alternatives.

"Health Food" stores are not always healthy. Some use the name to make you THINK their stuff is good for you. Greed.

Most people believe blindly that if it's on the shelf it must be safe to consume, and have no idea the corruption that goes on in passing food safety regulations. Just look at the scam in allowing aspartame on the market, CEO of founding corp sat on the FDA. Buy local, organic, real food and live long
katja commented on 25-Nov-2010 02:25 AM5 out of 5 stars
Also avoid Carmine. Didn't see that listed above. New FDA law in effect Jan 2011 to disclose Carmine on package label. I don't think red #40 above is the same since the E numbers are different, Carmine is E120.

I started watching what i was eating lost 50 pounds my A1C for diabetes are normal now and so is every thing else. i was told I was ready to have a stroke. It is true don't eat any thing that has a long list of ingredients. Even peanut butter has crap in it. It's worth the change.

I have bought organic for 30 years..I married a man who has allergic reactions to MSG.. eating out is tricky....during my first pregnancy I didn't realize how most Chinese food establisments were heavy handed on their MSG..I couldn't keep Chinese food down..if we ate out..
During Thanksgiving many people use Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup for one of their dishes and It is loaded with MSG...this I know because of my Husbands reaction to eating it...

Regarding wine: Organic wine is obviously made with grapes which haven't been sprayed with pesticides, - BUT they can still add sulphites afterwards, as far as I know. Otherwise, how do they preserve the wine? And if they have a better method, less toxic, why can't 'conventional' growers use that same method?

Great article. Alternatives would make it better. I get annoyed when a package says "0 grams trans fat!" which may just mean not enough per serving to have to report it, but usually you will see "partially hydrogenated oil" in the ingredients list.

I see a lot of concern over wine in the comments here. You can find sulphite free wineries here in the US. For instance, Frey Vineyard in Redwood Valley, CA is the first organic and biodynamic winery in the US, and all of their wines are sulphite-free. Here is their website: freywine.com. I had the pleasure of WWOOFing at the vineyard this summer and it was amazing. I highly recommend supporting them and their wine.

My husband and I found it farely easy and not too expensive to eat an all natural and organic diet and we are young, 25 years old. We found that looking up online coupons for the organic and natural foods we buy has saved us about 10-15 dollars off our grocery bill. We get coupons from organic milk to organic snacks, spices, cereals..anything. The manufacturers have coupons on their websites and you can use a search engine to find different sites that have valid coupons. Also our local health food store has a coupon book which we use as well. Just by taking 1-2 dollars off each product we buy has saved us a lot and we can eat healthy without the high price. Hope that helps anyone who wants to eat healthy and thinks they can't afford it.

I like how this list's number 1 is mostly based on unsure science and things that have yet to be proven, but trans fat manages to fall to number 4 below MSG as well (also has somewhat poor science behind it at this point in time). Might want to get your priorities straight here.

Hippies still suck...Might be wise to do your own research...it is all there in black and white..I Had to do a 10 page research paper on Aspartame in college...It was scarey what was found. Aspartame is basically what is left over from chemical warfare! Why it is allowed on the shelf is beyond me...keeps the docs and pharm companies happy..with the 23 different types of cancer it causes!

I decided many years ago, if I can't easily pronounce what is in a food product or beverage and/or if it sounds like a chemical, I don't eat or drink it.
Lbertybell commented on 02-Jan-2011 10:06 AM3 out of 5 stars
The earlier fellow's comment about the lack of research sources is well founded. The source links provided above point to similar lists, but none of them except the aspartame link have sources either. In a couple of cases typos from them show up here: "Effects the neurological system of the brain" should be "Affects."

Not to say there isn't research on these additives -- there is, and this list may have much to offer. But there's such a tendency for Internet anecdotes to swamp actual research, which is why I'm inserting this (minority) note of caution.

The bottom line here is that it's best to avoid processed, refined foods.
Rachelle commented on 06-Jan-2011 05:10 PM4 out of 5 stars
I'll agree this article didn't site their sorces...but there are plenty. Try reading or listening to some of David Getoff's stuff and he'll give you plenty of research done of the above mentioned additives. Beware, foods labled "All Natural" often contain above mentioned additives...even foods labled "organic" can. Seasonings often contain fillers as well. It's best to make your food from scratch using whole foods. It is very time consuming and/or significantly more expensive but your health is worth it. My husband was diagnosed with fatty liver at 29 and changed his diet to avoid the above additives and lost 40 lbs in less then a year without any other major changes.

powdered milk, powdered eggs, some reduced fat milk (milk powder is added to make it opaque), baked goods (made with eggs), aged/dried cheese, powdered butter, hard meats (salami, pepperoni, etc.).

A perfect example of how the public can be misled is a recent Internet article by a Nancy Markle that has taken on a "cyberlife" of its own. The article alleges that aspartame (a sweetener found in food and beverages) causes lupus, multiple sclerosis (MS)
and other diseases and conditions, none of which has any scientific validity. Highly respected health professional organizations were fraudulently associated with the story, and numerous vulnerable people were needlessly frightened by this scientifically false
allegation. One of the marvels of the Internet is that as easily as you can receive inaccurate information, you can search for and find accurate information. If consumers were concerned about the alleged aspartame connection with MS, they could check the Multiple
Sclerosis Foundation's Internet site for accurate information. David Squillacote, M.D., senior medical advisor of the MS Foundation wrote in his response to the Internet scare, "This series of allegations by Ms. Markle are almost totally without foundation.
They are rabidly inaccurate and scandalously misinformative." Fortunately, numerous reliable organizations, Internet sites and publications have refuted this particular epidemic of hysteria and provided additional context for consumers. The FDA's website is
an excellent source for accurate information. Consumers wishing to counteract or confirm the aspartame story can find the following information from the FDA which could allay their fears: "After reviewing scientific studies, the FDA determined in 1981 that
aspartame was safe for use in foodsTo date, the FDA has not determined any consistent pattern of symptoms that can be attributed to the use of aspartame, nor is the agency aware of any recent studies that clearly show safety problems."

Thanks so much for your list. I am appaulled that our government regulates for corporate profit over human health. Unfortunately, Olestra is still on the market in Pringles and I accidently ate some the other night.  I had severe stomach cramps, extreme
nausea and frequent bathroom trips.  It took me three days to recover.  I thought to myself, this is the same way that I felt the last time I accidentally ate Olestra but I knew that it must be something else because Olestra must have been made illegal.  After
some research, I discovered my sickness was due to the fake fat.  I was so horrified by this, I wrote a poem about my experience. Poem: "Ode to Oleastra" Also titled "I Can't Believe this Stuff is Still Legal" I dipped my chip, In a touch of dip, And chowed
on it so quaintly. Because it is, A low fat chip, I feel I could eat it nightly. But through the night, My stomach screamed, What did you put in me? I did not know, But had to go, Because my stomach's achy. When poisons flow, The bathroom I go, Trip after
trip after trip. Which led me down, To question roun', Was it the chip or the dip? My answer came, From the raging fame, Of a poison substance. The non-fat chip, And not the dip, Was why my body's resistance. Olean,** P&G's Olestra Brand, Can cause even anal
leakage. It is legal because, The corporate claws, Can seize their financial reapage. So before you eat, Any American treat, Look at what is in it. You may not be well, You'll feel like hell, Cause FDA wants more corporate profit. "Olestra chips make me sick"
