11-Year-Old Explains His Take On The Food System (Video)

11-year-old Birke Baehr has "discovered the dark side of the industrialized food system." And he explains it so simply in this five-minute talk at TEDx.

Birke says he used to want to be a pro football player, but now wants to be an organic farmer. He also says that he "likes eating baked kale chips" and that "we can pay the farmer or we can pay the hospital." But his best line might be his closing statement: "Next time you're at the grocery store, think local, choose organic, know your farmer, and know your food."
Get inspired by this amazing 11-year-old!

Sometimes the only solution to a backwards world is the thinking of the next generation. This boy proves that hope is not lost, and we can get back to a healthy and sustainable way of living, one day at a time. Well done :)

We need more people like Birke Baehr! He is speaking my kind of passion for having a more beautiful world, which I believe that every one of us deserves to live in. I think that we all have compassion towards both every living and non living thing. For some reason or other, we have lost our true nature towards Mother Earth. We need to learn how to return to our earthy nature, so we all can be blessed as long as we live. Living in a Heaven like is every human being's birth right! We all only live once, why not to give ourselves a best chance to truly learn what a real living is about?! I love the video! Bravo!!

WOW - what stage presence for such a young lad - "out of the mouths of babes" - we need to listen to this boy and disregard age as a factor to understanding knowledge!!!!! He knows what he's talking about. Makes you understand why you need fresh stuff and good quality vitamins for what our store bought food is missing

Great message from a great kid. Tell him to stop pumping his arms up and down aimlessly, it's distracting, and looks like someone told him to use his arms. Otherwise, Great!!!!!

Wow what an amazing intelligent 11 yr old child. He is much smarter than ur average adult. I applaud his parents for homeschooling him and being attentive and encouraging their kids to get out there and not be afraid. It also helps he has a nutritious diet which makes for a healthier brain functions.

KUDOS....if you don't look for a local organic farmer after listening to this young man, you must be deaf.

Well done Birke, keep up the good work and best of luck with your farm!

This is great! And I love the fact that its coming from a child's mouth. Everyone needs to wake up and make a change!

I think the most important message of Birke's presentation is that we need to spread these ideas around us, ignoring the sometimes disapproving looks and get everyone around to THINK. People just don't think in their everyday marathon. Make them stop, take a break and think. I work with kids in the same area of interest and they got really inspired by Birke. THANK YOU!

I'm a sixteen year old who is in almost the exact situation Birke is in except I'm a vegan. When I found out almost everything I'd been taught about food was a lie to make money, I decided to change my habits and I will forever be that way. After seeing this I want to start some sort of movement along with other kids who know the truth because all the lies and crap (literally) that go into the food industry need to be stopped now.

Muppet on a string. Where's Michale Pollan holding the strings?

Hey kid, where's the facts you base your talk on? You want to be a farmer, Congratulations! Now go get your fingers dirty and learn in the real world.

I don't disagree with the message, but I really resent manipulating children to grab people's attention.

It sounds like he has been forced to learn this speech by someone, who could that be considering he is home schooled, mmmmm.
Debra commented on 14-Feb-2012 05:30 AM5 out of 5 stars
Wow. Some people are mean when they comment. The facts he stated were true. Watch Food inc. And as far as being brainwashed... I brainwash my kids everyday to eat healthy. But you can tell this kids as found a passion. I would like to make a constructive
critisism to help your audience connect with you. Careful what you do with your hands. Try to be aware of them. Other than that you rock!
