Apple Cider Vinegar - The Wonder 'Drug' of Yesterday and Today

What is Apple Cider Vinegar?

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is an effective natural bacteria-fighting agent that contains many vital minerals and trace elements such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, chlorine, sodium, sulfur, copper, iron, silicon and fluorine that are vital for a healthy body.

Natural Apple Cider Vinegar is made by crushing fresh, organically grown apples and allowing them to mature in wooden barrels. This boosts the natural fermentation qualities of the crushed apples, which differs from the refined and distilled vinegars found in supermarkets. When the vinegar is mature, it contains a dark, cloudy, web-like bacterial foam called mother, which becomes visible when the rich brownish liquid is held to the light. The mother can be used to add to other vinegar to hasten maturity for making more Apple Cider Vinegar. Natural vinegars that contain the mother have enzymes and minerals that other vinegars in grocery stores may not have due to over-processing, over-heating, and filtration. For this reason, it is recommended that you purchase only unpasteurized Apple Cider Vinegar, with an ideal acidity (pH) level of 5 to 7, this health drink is a natural probiotic.

What are the Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar?

Natural Apple Cider Vinegar is a wonderful natural cure for a number of ailments which usually require antibiotics and other medications that have a number of side effects. In particular, Apple Cider Vinegar has been known to:
  • Reduce sinus infections and sore throats
  • Balance high cholesterol
  • Cure skin conditions such as acne
  • Protect against food poisoning
  • Fight allergies in both humans and animals
  • Prevent muscle fatigue after exercise
  • Strengthen the immune system
  • Increase stamina
  • Increase metabolism which promotes weight loss
  • Improve digestion and cure constipation
  • Alleviate symptoms of arthritis and gout
  • Prevents bladder stones and urinary tract infections
Uses of Apple Cider Vinegar:

General Health Problems:

Weight Loss

The use of apple cider vinegar as a home remedy for weight loss is centuries old. D.C. Jarvis, M.D maintained that an overweight person could lose weight gradually by taking 2 teaspoons of ACV in a glass of water before meals.

Bad Breath

Due to its anticeptic properties, Apple Cider Vinegar makes a wonderful remedy for bad breath or halitosis. Simply add 2 teaspoons of ACV into a cup of water and gargle the mixture in your mouth for 10 seconds at a time and spit the solution out. Repeat until the cup is empty.

Body Odor

Apple Cider Vinegar is an effective body odor remedy, since it can help adjust the skin's pH level which helps to eliminate odor-causing bacteria. For armpit odor, simply wipe them once each morning with undiluted apple cider vinegar (using a cotton ball). For foot odor, fill a pan with warm water and add 1/3 cup of ACV, then let your feet soak in this mixture for 15 minutes once per week.

Skin Problems and Infections:

Acne

Apple Cider Vinegar is a natural cure for acne. Apply a solution of apple cider vinegar and water (2 tablespoons to 1 eight ounce glass of water) with a cotton ball several times a day. This will help reduce infection and dry out inflammation.

Age Spots

Apple Cider Vinegar contains sulfur that fights the effects of aging, which makes it suitable for treating age spots. Apply daily, to these darkened areas of the skin, a solution containing 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and 1 teaspoon of onion juice. According to this home remedy, the spots should begin to fade within 2 weeks.

Cellulite

Many women have found that Apple Cider Vinegar can help reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Yeast Infection

Apple Cider Vinegar has been found to be an effective treatment for yeast infections.

Stomach Problems:

Heartburn

This usually occurs after eating, sometimes up to two hours later. This very unpleasant feeling can be alleviated by taking 2 TBS Apple Cider Vinegar in 8 OZ of water, taken three times a day before meals.

Constipation

Apple Cider Vinegar is frequently used as a natural cure for constipation.

Diarrhea

There are various causes for diarrhea, and although it should not be left untreated, it is often a natural way for the body to rid itself of harmful compounds and ingested materials. Apple Cider Vinegar is a fantastic natural remedy for diarrhea since the high pectin concentration acts as a protective coating which soothes the irritated lining of the colon. A suggestion is to add 2 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar to a large glass of water, and drink this 3 times daily while the symptoms persist.

Major Illnesses:

Diabetes

Apple Cider Vinegar may help to control high blood sugar levels, which is why it is often used as a natural treatment for Diabetes.

How to take it?

For daily maintenance, weight loss and pH balancing:
  • 2 teaspoons in 8 oz of water 3x a day (taken before your meals)

For treating an acute condition like acid reflux, cough, bronchitis, or sore throat:
  • 2 Tablespoons in 8 OZ of water 3x a day (taken before your meals) .

To help with the taste you can always add a tablespoon of raw honey.

Apple cider vinegar is a cure all for everything. I had a nasty wart growing and after a few applications of ACV it is gone.

Interesting that it a cure for diarrhea and constipation!
This also gets you to drink 3 more glasses of water daily, which is good in itself.

I was told that you can take a bath with a cup or two of ACV and it will act as a drawing agent and pull toxins out of your skin. Does it really work? I don't know. Have I tried it? Yes. I was sick and was doing anything to help build my immune system.

Wondering where to get unpasteurized ACV...?
ED: Hi there - any health food store should carry Bragg's which is a raw product :) Jess

Before I started using Bragg's ACV, I lived on Cipro for urinary tract infections. Knock on wood, I haven't had one in a very long time. I swear by the stuff!!!
Shannon W commented on 09-Apr-2011 09:35 PM5 out of 5 stars
Can you say miracle in a bottle? Well if you have one you can! Make sure it has the Mother in it though. Bragg's is the best I've found.

Great article. I've been using ACV for years. Started my 3 year old daughter on it with tomatoe juice to disguise the taste. Now 19, she takes it when she feels extremely tired when her immune system might be compromised.
Pam commented on 10-Apr-2011 12:07 AM5 out of 5 stars
Very interesting, my bottle of ACV has now moved it's way to the front of my pantry. I never knew how versatile it is, thanks for the great info and in all newsletters! :-)

I can't stand to use sunblocks and try to moderate my sun exposure. However if I've had too much fun in the sun, I draw a tepid bath after arriving home and pour about 1/3 to 1/2 gallon ACV into the water. Soaking in that solution seems to pull the sting and redness from my skin and I rarely have any trace of a burn the following day.

I can't touch the stuff. Wish I could. I bought some through our food co-op that was highly recommended and well known. I put 1 tsp in 8 ounces of water and ended up with severe muscle/joint pain and a migraine. Ugh!
Kim Wike commented on 12-Apr-2011 09:37 AM5 out of 5 stars
Great article. I had no idea that ACV had so many great uses. I use it all the time to make collards and use it for other things in the kitchen - does ACV loose all of these great properties when you cook with it? I'm sure that It's best raw of course. Any idea where to buy it unpasteurized? Online?
ED: Hi there - you can pick up raw ACV at health food stores or even in some supermarkets. Braggs makes a good one!
Lorena Holmstead commented on 14-Apr-2011 04:43 AM5 out of 5 stars
To Anonymous, who had severe muscle/joint pain and a migraine when using ACV. It sounds like you were detoxing. To not make it so intense, cut back on dosage, but don't give up on it altogether! You'll get through it and the symptoms will be gone. Consult
someone who knows about cleansing!
SK commented on 15-Apr-2011 12:52 AM5 out of 5 stars
I appreciate all the info in this article and the various comments, but was surprised that no one mentioned ACV as a great hair rinse. Just dilute a bit of it in a jar of warm water and pour over your head after shampooing. My sisters and I have longed
used this regularly; it leaves hair sparkling, with no need for expensive, plastic-bottled conditioners.
Kim commented on 16-Apr-2011 03:12 AM5 out of 5 stars
We've been using ACV with the mother in our horses water troughs for years. They drink more, it reduces the fly population and even our arthritic horses seem to do better. With 30 horses on the property it can get rather expensive. Would love to know how
to use ACV with the mother to make more ACV to keep our costs down.

It's great for putting in your dogs water too! My in-laws have been doing it for years and their dogs have never had flea problems. Lot cheaper than Frontline.

I had used ACV with water to help get rid of a UTI and it just made the problem worse...ended up needing anti-biotic to clear the infection. Was told it's good for prevention, but once you've got the infection, it's no longer helpful. I'm currently dealing
with a possible absessed/infected tooth (or what's left of it, along with a hole where the filling once was. This morning I woke with a fever and sore throat similar to what Strep feels like. I've been gargling with Biotene mouthrinse and trying to keep the
area clean...jawline on that side is swollen (got the whole Chipmunk cheek thing going on...LOL). Has anyone ever used ACV for something like this? Being on Medicare and Medical Assistance & no dentists in area taking new patients with this coverage, I'd have
to pay out-of-pocket, which I can't afford being on disability. Any suggestions? I'm half tempted to pull the darn thing out myself & then go to urgent care or the ER at least to see if they'll prescribe the anti-biotics! It's ridiculous how much worse this
pain is, than the pain I'm having with my Fibromyalgia :(

To the person wondering how an acid can alleviate indigestion; many acidic foods eaten are digested and turned into an alkali in the digestion process.

I have had 2 abscesses before. Both times I used a white or green-tea, tea bag. I put it inside my lip next to the abscess and went to sleep. Next morning It was getting better. I did it again the next night and about the 3rd night it was gone. The tea
bag pulled out the infection. You can see it on the tea bag when you throw it away. And it also took away all the pain. Hope it helps you.

For years, I had agonizing stomach pain and pressure periodically. Everyone, including doctors in the ER said it sounded like gall stones, but testing never revealed anything besides a sluggish gall bladder. After years of documenting when the pain would
occur, I linked it to foods containing corn, bananas, and dried onions, no matter how minute the amount. If I ingested something containing those foods, within an hour I would have intense pain and bloating just below my ribcage. It would last from 8 to 10
hours. No remedy ever helped, that is until I stumbled upon something on the Internet about ACV. Let me tell you, it has been a Godsend! I drink a couple tablespoons of ACV mixed in a small glass of apple juice, and the pain disappears within 15 minutes! By
the way, I was tested for food allergies to those offending foods and they came back negative. I don't care why it works...it just does! I'm tempted to carry a flask of ACV in my purse for emergencies!

Friendly suggestion: definitely agree with diluting it in water. Also suggest drinking through a straw to bi-pass your teeth. The acid can do a number on enamel over time. I agree with all the comments stated. It really does have a place in our daily diets.
I find it to be a great counter balance when I eat unhealthy. As soon as I swig it I feel I'm back on the horse.

my mother who is her late 70's has ALWAYS sworn by ACV. She said they used it for almost everything during the depression because they were poor and no one had much money for anything. she said even the doc (for people and farm animals) in town would tell
them to take vinegar with something? and it would cure just abt everything. i hate the taste&smell but after reading all this I'll be taking it and calling my mom with an apology for thinking this was just "old school thinking" thanks for the article. v

After reading about acv, I researched topical benefits. I read that it is an antiinflammatory so I tried using it on my hands. I had some soreness in finger joints. I soaked my hands in straight acv for 30 minutes while watching tv. It was amazing, my
hands are back to 99%. I do this now 2 or 3 times a week.
Haleigh commented on 09-Feb-2012 12:10 AM5 out of 5 stars
My dad is a firm believer of ACV and after reading, per his request, I may very well be leaning more towards it as well, however being in the dental profession, I highly recommend having any abcess or tooth ache checked out, while ACV may help with the
pain/infection, until the tooth, which is the source of infection, is taken care of, it will continue to bother you. Also the same bacteria from teeth/gums is found to be the same bacteria that causes heart attacks and strokes.
