Jamie Oliver Speaks out on Obesity and Disease

Even though there are many perspectives on health and how to handle obesity and disease, there are some incredible people lobbying for change in the world. Change that we know needs to come.

Jamie Oliver is just one of those people and we stand behind his energy and commitment to helping change people's attitudes towards food. This kickstarts the transition from unhealthy processed foods to healthier whole natural foods, where going back to nature is key.

Please enjoy this video and share this link with others whom you think might benefit from this information.

If you are looking to learn how to prepare healthier meals or juices we have two great DVDs you might be interested in: Essential Cuisine and 7lbs in 7 days and if you have yet to watch 'Food Matters' this might be a good place to get started.

People do need to change their eating habits, but it is not the governments responsibility to force it on a free society. It is the parents of these children that are doing them a disservice, not the government. If parents don't like what is being served at school, they can send lunch with their child. I have 3 children attending school and I send their lunch everyday. I send lunch with my husband to work everyday. I feed them all breakfast before they leave for the day and dinner when we are home together at night. My husband and I are responsible for ourselves and our children, and as such, are free to choose what and where to eat. I do not want the government in my kitchen or my family's lunch boxes. When is everyone going to start realizing that they are the ones that are responsible for themselves? The government did not make it a crime to eat healthy. What the government did do was declare that obesity is a disease that has to be treated by doctors and covered by insurance, including Medicare. So, it is no longer an individuals fault that he or she is obese. They have a disease. No longer can doctors simply say that you need to loose a few pounds and start eating right. Or that insurance companies or medicare can deny claims because people made bad choices about the foods they eat. It's an individuals choice to put that cigarette in their mouth and fill their lungs with smoke, just like it is an individuals choice to put that food in their mouth and get fat. Mr. Oliver was right on point about the problem, but the solution is not government intervention. It is having individuals, and parents, step up to the 'plate' and start making better choices.

jamie is at the beginning of realising what food really is. he thinks he is the only person on this planet that knows what is right, but he is wrong about so many things. he promotes meat, fish, milk, etc. and that IS WRONG. yes, if he can change a little bit in the right direction, then it's good. but somebody should tell him what's still missing, what destroys not only our and others lifes but the planet too. somebody should tell HIM the pieces he still lacks...
Norine commented on 08-Jul-2010 04:01 AM5 out of 5 stars
I agree with anonymous that the government does not need to get into our lunch boxes but the government does need to get into the food industry and step up the standards of what constitutes safe food. All chemicals/preservatives used in food need to be clearly labeled and identified. Each and every one of them. Then the public needs to be made aware of what each and every one of those chemicals does to our bodies so we as consumers can choose to buy or not buy that food. All GMO food needs to be labelled clearly so as a consumer, I can choose to not buy that food. She is right that there should be penalties for obesity related diseases being covered by health care just as there should be for those who smoke. Once it hits the pocket books of the individuals then they pay attention to what they are doing to themselves. We have laws now that state there can be no smoking in public places as there should be laws against all the chemicals and GMO products used in foods sold to the public that are poisoning us to death. That is the right place for government to be. Step up to the plate government and do the public a good service. We the public need to vote in those that will do the job right but you can bet the food industry is lobbying hard against that.

Thanks Jamie. This is brilliant! You are such an inspiration - and this from a fellow Essex girl!!

I agree with Norine's comments. It isn't about the government getting into our lunch boxes, but it is about education and controlling the big food giants that have done the public a disservice for so many years.

And Jamie spoke about Corporate Responsibility: its a big thing these days and the food giants, manudacturers and retailers, need to show they are responsible not just by making environmental changes (which I wholly support of course) but also considering people and starting to make huge changes in food products and also educate people as Jamie suggested.

I agree with the comments from
"Anonymous". But grown people are hard to change. They need to educate the children in school and when they are adults, then they will practice better nutrition. My mother started me on the road to better nutrition and I raised my family with home grown food and shop for organic foods. But I read that organic foods are also being radiated. Can't seem to win. We have to get our politicians to pass laws and the FDA not to be so corrupt so that
we can shop faster in the stores and not have to read every label and then come home and find organics are not what we thought we purchased. It is hard for folks like us to eat without chemicals, radiation and sugars. Great job Jamie. God love you and keep it up.
Iain commented on 08-Jul-2010 07:59 AM5 out of 5 stars
The government needs to control food processing. You may send lunch to school and work, but what is in the lunch? After water, flour, fructose glucose is the 3rd most significant ingredient in white bread. Fructose glucose replaced sugar in soda. This is what all that corn is grown for, the fructose glucose for soda and food. This is all the sugar Jamie is talking about. It is in the food you are sending to school, to work, that you eat yourself. Buy local, avoid processed food...that is the individual choice. Government needs to control what is sold. Labeling is critical.

I hate to sound cynical, but even though the information about food and diet has been out there for ages most people just don't bother to take any notice. Which is why you hardly ever see a slim person in the street, or in the supermarket, or at the doctor's surgery. Everyone seems to be overweight, fat or obese. It's appalling! This is about the mentality of the human race, and denial and ignorance. In just about every weekly woman's magazine there are healthy and delicious recipes presented which anyone can whip up if they so desire. It all falls on deaf ears. People develop food addictions over time and even though they know they are fat or obese, they don't seem to get motivated enough to make a change and eat smaller and healthier meals. I see it every day and can't understand it - it must be SO uncomfortable just putting on a shoe, or picking something up off the floor, getting out of a chair... WALKING. Beats me! I notice in restaurants that most people eat the meat, but leave the vegetables (apart from potatoes/fries) and salad on the side of the plate. I see people who are already overweight order desserts... the LAST people who should be eating dessert!
Sadly, people in general are basically VERY difficult to influence, which is why there are so many overweight and obese individuals today. The information has been out there for YEARS for God's sake! People just don't want to know... same problem with smoking and other destructive behaviours. The fabulous Jamie is absolutely correct. It has to start with children being given classes on nutrition at school. That's where it needs to begin. It rarely begins at home these days. Very depressing... but hopefully with people like Jamie, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Go Jamie!

Jamie is right on so many fronts-the great nutrition pioneer Weston A Price would be proud of him!Just a word on milk though-the pasturised & homogenised milk we drink today is actually a non-food.The only milk that is good for humans is raw untreated milk from herds that are grass fed & tested for disease. This milk has all its enzymes and nutrients intact so we can digest it.Check out www.Westonapricefoundation.org

I love this. Jamie aint perfect (eggs, milk etc) but he sure is a ballsy guy doing a great thing. It's great to see him using his celebrity status to make a big impact on health. To the ppl baggin him (get the govt out of our lunch boxes etc) - I think if you knew how bad lots of people were eating you might get the point. In England where he started off, kids are given lunch at school when they qualify for it, after proving they are in the lowest socioeconomic bracket - read the families are so poor this might be the only meal the kids is assured of getting. So it's much more complex than just saying 'parents should take better care of their kids' blah blah blah. You might be health conscious enough and able to pack your hubbie + kids lunch, but for MANY kids that doesn't happen, so they're fed absolute crap at school. Plus they're just not taught nutrition at school. I'm pretty sure that's Jamie's main aim- to get kids better food and to work from there.

Nice one gov!! Jamie is doing a wonderful job of putting diet, as a cause of disease, in peoples faces the world over. As someone mentioned before, he ain't perfect (milk etc) but at least what he is putting forward is a starting point and a possible solution. Schools are a definite hot spot to start. How can you learn or think clearly if you are toxic and full of crap!?! But good luck going up against the industrial food giants. The revolving doors of the FDA and destructive corporation officials...man, makes my head spin...Theres so much more to the debate. The medical/sickness industry, GM food, labeling, Mercury in the fish, toxic milk/dairy, hormones in the meat, pesticides on our food, morons in power....We all just need to walk outside, get our hands in the dirt and plant some seed. We are people of this earth, not the "stupidmarket". Good on ya Jamie :)

Jamie Oliver you are brilliant, his basic message is changing a WRONG mentality about food, that is it, very simple and its about time someone actually put it so passionately and so succinctly, it is true, it may not be all the truth but it nonetheless is right on the mark. He does not accuse, attack or promote conspiracy other than to make us wake up. Education and acknowledgement, brilliant and keep on the good fight. I'd work for you anyday.

Great work, Jamie. Having moved to Oz a few years ago, I was horrified to see that many additives, colourings, preservatives etc. banned in most countries are still allowed to be used here! There has to be government intervention. Large multi-national companies use different "toxic" ingredients for their goods here because they are cheaper and they can. Wake up Australia! Why are you allowing a wonderful country to be used as a dumping ground for stuff that industry wants to use up to save them money. We are all worth more than that and so are our children. EVERYTHING that is in a product should be on the label. We would all be shocked and horrified at the toxic rubbish that is not mentioned because it falls under the 1%. We can all make a difference. Vote with your feet and your wallet. If sales drop, manufacturers soon want to make changes but proper legislation that is enforced has to be brought in.

An excellent piece! We the people do need to mobilize and take back our health. We also need to monitor the government to make sure they are protecting us. The government does not get a FREE pass here. Yes, the ones that are so efficient at taxing us. The primary job of any government is to protect its citizens from destructive forces international or domestic. For example, if we experience a pandemic is it the Citizens or the Governments responsibilty to control the SPREAD? We have an emergency before us now and our Government is sleeping at the wheel. Lets wake them up!

Thank you Jamie, it makes such a difference when people with your celebrity status get real about our current situation...people listen...and there will be movement, thank you food matters I had a "reasonably healthy" diet until I watched your dvd...now I have a vegetarian diet with daily superfoods and 2 completely raw meals a week. Thank you for kicking me in the butt! My one year old daughter love our spirulina bliss balls and our raw cocoa and rice milk smoothies!
Keep up the GREAT work

Great to see people like Jamie getting involved . . . the BEGINNING of great things! Hope they include excellent resources like those available on this site (e.g. on eating RAW) in the education programs. Great start -society can be changed one step at a time -unfortunately, it won't be that quick, as food is a pretty emotional (although sub-conscious) issue for most "Don't touch my food!" -Only other option is Allopathic Medicine i.e. DRUGS . . . but with "Properly Prescribed Pharmaceuticals" already being the 3rd leading cause of death in the US -that doesn't seem like a great option either! -they pretty much had their chance, and after many decades, haven't provided the solutions! I think we should all just agree, that the answer to a healthy society only lies in personally taking responsibility for your health by GETTING THE RIGHT INFORMATION -and then DOING IT! We owe it to ourselves and our loved-ones.

First of all it is the government that puts control on our food and are letting big companys sell danergours food products, they don't need to force of to eat health, but they do need to monitor the unhealthy food thatare traking over the country. In additon to we need to make it our own personal responsibility to eat health. Problem is people are clueless to what is actually healthy. ingredients are difficult to uncerstand and cooking health meals are time consuming. Microwaves rule the world and they are completely unhealthy.
