A New Perspective On The 'Food Pyramid'

In December 2000, a U.S. District Court judge ruled that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) violated federal laws when they selected individuals with known financial ties to various food industries to serve as members to the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. This group was in charge of drawing up the latest nutritional guidelines that comprise the USDA's "Food Pyramid".

In addition to its educational purpose, the pyramid also serves as a basis for all federally funded food programs in the United States.

The research and advocacy group Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) had filed the lawsuit in December, 2000.

PCRM asserts that the current food pyramid is unhealthy because it promotes the consumption of meat, eggs and dairy as part of the daily diet.

They also maintain that it is racially biased since nonwhite races are more likely to be lactose intolerant and some are more susceptible to diet-related chronic illnesses including heart disease, stroke, hypertension, obesity, diabetes and certain types of cancer.

As a matter of fact, several groups and people within the African-American community openly supported PCRM's lawsuit, including the NAACP, former Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders, Martin Luther King, III, and Muhammad Ali.

I think you should add Mercola's comments after the article, which are highly relevant. "PCRM again, as they have often in the past, did a really great job here in taking a federal agency to task for acting improperly. My one and only problem with them, as many of you have already heard me say, is that I strongly disagree with their pro-vegan and anti-meat and eggs agenda." Dr Mercola

Yes, a very good effort but if you read Dr. Weston A Price's book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration it will demonstrate that optimal health can be attained by eating clean meat and animal products. On this guide as well many processed foods are contained. Take soy milk for example....just the plastic liner inside cartons that carry soy milk is extremely toxic not to mention the added sugar, tap water etc etc. I enjoy Mike Adams for sure and I eat a plant based diet many months of the year but that does not mean clean animal products are bad or that you can include some questionable plant based products on the guide. One man's fish can be another man's poison. Imagine Canadian Eskimos eating this diet. They would die in short order because their traditional diet is near 90% animal products. Love you guys. Keep up the good work. I highlight your video on a regular basis within my blog.

I can't find any evidence of this on PCRM's website. The only thing they have is an announcement of the same thing from 2001. Is this really, really old news?

'THERE IS A GOD'! Justice will prevail, somehow-someway! All of this gives a new meaning to 'pray before you eat' life style... "FATHER PUT SOME LIFE BACK INTO THIS FOOD"!!

Great comments by Jason, however Dr. Price's work is nearly 70 years old and "clean" meat is too costly (environmentally) for it to be part of everyone's diet. The amount of grass and water required to get beef to market is staggering. I encourage folks to seriously consider vegetarianism. The vast majority of humans can get all they need from plant based foods.

I belive that eating proper foods is the key to a long and healthy life. I also know that fruits and vegetables are the main ingredient to help your body maintain health and improve functions. You can eat them raw or in juice form, which is much easier for your body to process. Check it out. Cheers to your health.

I love the idea of RAW foods, but I think there is something to be said for eating organic eggs and wild seafood too.

Soy...??? It's not good for common consumption. "Two senior US government scientists have revealed that chemicals in soy could increase the risk of breast cancer in women, brain damage in both men and women, and abnormalities in infants (http://www.mercola.com/article/soy/index.htm)." Try Tempeh in it's place. What about mentioning High Fructose Corn Syrup and all the artificial and 'natural' flavorings and colorings?
Tiff commented on 26-Aug-2010 11:36 AM5 out of 5 stars
It is better than the food pyramid but is a little misleading too. 1) soy should not be promoted as healthy, more studies need to be done, but given the extent to which it is processed, my family will not be consuming it in substantial quantities. 2) Not all red meats are bad and grass-fed and/ or wild caguht meats should be promoted as an important part of a healthy diet in moderation.

This food pyramid still needs alot of work. There is no breakdown of grass fed meats vs commercially fed meats. Grains are not healthy either and should be on the disease side. I guess it is a start.

Dr. Mercola makes outrageous claims. I'd take anything he has to say with a grain of salt.
