Root Canal Cover Up Exposed

An interview with Dr George Meinig, D.D.S.

Dr. Meinig brings a most curious perspective to an expose of the latent dangers of root canal therapy. As one of the original founders of the American Association of Endodontists (root canal specialists) he's filled his share of root canals. And when he wasn't filling canals himself, he was teaching the technique to dentists across the country at weekend seminars and clinics. About two years ago, having recently retired, he decided to read all 1174 pages of the detailed research of Dr. Weston Price, (D.D.S). Dr. Meinig was startled and shocked. Here was valid documentation of systemic illnesses resulting from latent infections lingering in filled roots. He has since written a book, "Root Canal Cover-Up EXPOSED - Many Illnesses Result", and is devoting himself to radio, TV, and personal appearances before groups in an attempt to blow the whistle and alert the public of the dangers of root canal therapy.

What the problem is with root canal therapy?

First, let me note that my book is based on Dr. Weston Price's twenty-five years of careful, impeccable research. He led a 60-man team of researchers whose findings - suppressed until now rank right up there with the greatest medical discoveries of all time. This is not the usual medical story of a prolonged search for the difficult-to-find causative agent of some devastating disease. Rather, it's the story of how a "cast of millions" (of bacteria) become entrenched inside the structure of teeth and end up causing the largest number of diseases ever traced to a single source.

What diseases? Can you give us some examples?

A high percentage of chronic degenerative diseases can originate from root filled teeth. The most frequent were heart and circulatory diseases and he found 16 different causative agents for these. The next most common diseases were those of the joints, arthritis and rheumatism. In third place - but almost tied for second - were diseases of the brain and nervous system. After that, any disease you can name might (and in some cases has) come from root filled teeth.

What is the "focal infection" theory?

This states that germs from a central focal infection - such as teeth, teeth roots, inflamed gum tissues, or maybe tonsils - metastasize to hearts, eyes, lungs, kidneys, or other organs, glands and tissues, establishing new areas of the same infection. Hardly theory any more, this has been proven and demonstrated many times over. It's 100% accepted today. But it was revolutionary thinking during World War I days, and the early 1920's!

Today, both patients and physicians have been "brain washed" to think that infections are less serious because we now have antibiotics. Well, yes and no. In the case of root-filled teeth, the no longer-living tooth lacks a blood supply to its interior. So circulating antibiotics don't faze the bacteria living there because they can't get at them.

Is everyone who has ever had a root canal filled made ill by it?

No. We believe now that every root canal filling does leak and bacteria do invade the structure. But the variable factor is the strength of the person's immune system. Some healthy people are able to control the germs that escape from their teeth into other areas of the body. We think this happens because their immune system lymphocytes (white blood cells) and other disease fighters aren't constantly compromised by other ailments. In other words, they are able to prevent those new colonies from taking hold in other tissues throughout the body. But over time, most people with root filled teeth do seem to develop some kinds of systemic symptoms they didn't have before.

It's really difficult to grasp that bacteria are embedded deep in the structure of seemingly-hard, solid looking teeth.

I know. Physicians and dentists have that same problem, too. You really have to visualize the tooth structure - all of those microscopic tubules running through the dentin. In a healthy tooth, those tubules transport a fluid that carries nourishment to the inside. For perspective, if the tubules of a front single-root tooth, were stretched out on the ground they'd stretch for three miles!

A root filled tooth no longer has any fluid circulating through it, but the maze of tubules remains. The anaerobic bacteria that live there seem remarkably safe from antibiotics. The bacteria can migrate out into surrounding tissue where they can "hitch hike" to other locations in the body via the bloodstream. The new location can be any organ or gland or tissue, and the new colony will be the next focus of infection in a body plagued by recurrent or chronic infections.

All of the "building up" done to try to enhance the patient's ability to fight infections - to strengthen their immune system - is only a holding action. Many patients won't be well until the source of infection - the root canal tooth - is removed.

I don't doubt what you're saying, but can you tell us more about how Dr. Price could be sure that arthritis or other systemic conditions and illnesses really originated in the teeth - or in a single tooth?

Yes. Many investigations start with the researcher just being curious about something - and then being scientifically careful enough to discover an answer, and then prove it's so, many times over. Dr. Price's first case is very well documented. He removed an infected tooth from a woman who suffered from severe arthritis. As soon as he finished with the patient, he implanted the tooth beneath the skin of a healthy rabbit. Within 48 hours the rabbit was crippled with arthritis!

Further, once the tooth was removed the patient's arthritis improved dramatically. This clearly suggested that the presence of the infected tooth was a causative agent for both that patient's and the rabbit's - arthritis.

In the years that followed, he repeated this procedure many hundreds of times. He later implanted only a portion of the tooth to see if that produced the same results. It did. He then dried the tooth, ground it into powder and injected a tiny bit into several rabbits. Same results, this time producing the same symptoms in multiple animals.

Dr. Price eventually grew cultures of the bacteria and injected them into the animals. Then he went a step further. He put the solution containing the bacteria through a filter small enough to catch the bacteria. So when he injected the resulting liquid it was free of any infecting bacteria. Did the test animals develop the illness? Yes. The only explanation was that the liquid had to contain toxins from the bacteria, and the toxins were also capable of causing disease.

Dr. Price became curious about which was the more potent infective agent, the bacteria or the toxin. He repeated that last experiment, injecting half the animals with the toxin-containing liquid and half of them with the bacteria from the filter. Both groups became ill, but the group injected with the toxins got sicker and died sooner than the bacteria injected animals.

That's amazing. Did the rabbits always develop the same disease the patient had?

Mostly, yes. If the patient had heart disease the rabbit got heart disease. If the patient had kidney disease the rabbit got kidney disease, and so on. Only occasionally did a rabbit develop a different disease - and then the pathology would be quite similar, in a different location.

If extraction proves necessary for anyone reading this, do you want to summarize what's special about the extraction technique?

Just pulling the tooth is not enough when removal proves necessary. Dr. Price found bacteria in the tissues and bone just adjacent to the tooth's root. So we now recommend slow-speed drilling with a burr, to remove one millimeter of the entire bony socket. The purpose is to remove the periodontal ligament (which is always infected with toxins produced by streptococcus bacteria living in the dentin tubules) and the first millimeter of bone that lines the socket (which is usually infected).

There's a whole protocol involved, including irrigating with sterile saline to assure removal of the contaminated bone chips, and treating the socket to stimulate and encourage infection-free healing.

Perhaps we should back up and talk about oral health - to PREVENT needing an extraction. Caries or inflamed gums seem much more common than root canals. Do they pose any threat?

Yes, they absolutely do. But let me point out that we can't talk about oral health apart from total health. The problem is that patients and dentists alike haven't come around to seeing that dental caries reflect systemic - meaning "whole body" - illness. Dentists have learned to restore teeth so expertly that both they and their patients have come to regard tooth decay as a trivial matter. It isn't.

Small cavities too often become big cavities. Big cavities too often lead to further destruction and the eventual need for root canal treatment.

Can you give us some advice about prevention?

The only scientific way to prevent tooth decay is through diet and nutrition. Dr. Ralph Steinman did some outstanding, landmark research at Loma Linda University. He injected a glucose solution into mice - into their bodies, so the glucose didn't even touch their teeth. Then he observed the teeth for any changes. What he found was truly astonishing. The glucose reversed the normal flow of fluid in the dentin tubules, resulting in all of the test animals developing severe tooth decay! Dr. Steinman demonstrated dramatically what I said a minute ago: Dental caries reflect systemic illness.

What a fascinating concept. Can you tell us more about the protective nutrition you mentioned?

Yes. Dr. Price traveled all over the world doing his research on primitive peoples who still lived in their native ways. He found fourteen cultural pockets scattered all over the globe where the natives had no access to "civilization" - and ate no refined foods.

Dr. Price studied their diets carefully. He found they varied greatly, but the one thing they had in common was that they ate whole, unrefined foods. With absolutely no access to tooth brushes, floss, fluoridated water or tooth paste, the primitive peoples studied were almost 100% free of tooth decay. Further - and not unrelated - they were also almost 100% free of all the degenerative diseases we suffer - problems with the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, joints, skin (allergies), and the whole gamut of illnesses that plague Mankind. No one food proved to be magic as a preventive food. I believe we can thrive best by eating a wide variety of whole foods.

Amazing. So by "diet and nutrition" for oral (and total) health you meant eating a pretty basic diet of whole foods?

Exactly. And no sugar or white flour. These are (and always have been) the first culprits. Tragically, when the primitives were introduced to sugar and white flour their superior level of health deteriorated rapidly. This has been demonstrated time and again. During the last sixty or more years we have added in increasing amounts, highly refined and fabricated cereals and boxed mixes of all kinds, soft drinks, refined vegetable oils and a whole host of other foodless "foods". It is also during those same years that we as a nation have installed more and more root canal fillings - and degenerative diseases have become rampant. I believe - and Dr. Price certainly proved to my satisfaction - that these simultaneous factors are NOT coincidences.

This is very concerning to me given that I have had two root canals. The process of getting this undone seems extremely difficult, expensive, and drastic. Are there any ways to live healthfully without going through these measures?

Amazing. Answers a lot of my questions. Unfortunately, I wish I found this out in my twenties.

I agree with Shannon. I have had a root canal and I am very concerned with this now, especially as I have developed severe health concerns since getting it done. I went from being relatively healthy to now having fibromyalgia with several food allergies. I now wonder if this is linked to my root canal...

This is very interesting and disturbing to me after recently visiting my dentist complaining about discomfort coming from what I believe intuitively is the root canal tooth. I live in the Tampabay area of florida, can you recommend a dentist in the area that perform the process you explained.

Hi all. I was present at a five-day legal deposition with Dr. Robert Kulacz this time last year and it was agreed that the focal infection theory has been debunked. But I love the Weston Price diet and drink raw milk every day! Since starting raw milk, my vitamin D levels have gone up to an optimal 80 ng/mL's (from a low of 11 ng/mL's, but I also get a lot of sunlight now too). I am raw omnivore and also eat and juice a lot of veggies. I have met one man, in person, who had his mercury fillings removed, left the holes in his teeth unfilled, drank a lot of raw milk, and the holes in his teeth filled in.

Fascinating! I started a nutritional cleansing program a couple of years ago, and my dental care professionals have commented on the change in my oral health. Now I realize it's probably related! My gums are noticeably stronger as well.

My holistic dentist in Sunnyale, Ca. Dr. Tim Gallagher being aware of the problems uses a product from Germany called BIOCALEX which I think has had a name change since he used it on me. the material prevents a gap in which bacteria can proliferate in the apex when the area is not completely sealed. Also it does not gas off toxins. I have had these for about 5 years , so far so good! However an accupuncturist did find a blockage of blood flow to the jaw and ameliorated this via his treatments, which resulted in freedom from pain in my jaw. this after going to 2 oral surgeons and other holistic procedures which were unsucssful in providing a "remedy" I would also recommend Alfa PXP Forte as this functional foood repairs and regenrates the cells as it provides access to the mitochondria in a way no other food does. Hope this is of value! Muriel G. ( 650 _593-3496)

As a practicing dentist, I agree on some points, but to advocate extraction in place of endodontic therapy for all involved teeth is somewhat reckless. I know many people's immune system cannot handle the added weight of an oral infection, but many can and do. I feel it is up to the dentist to help guide an individual to proper treatment, not make a blanket assumption that all root canals are dangerous! Obviously the key is prevention, but we practitioners are presented with root canals daily and many do very well!

Thanks for getting this out there. I have read much of Dr.Price's work & also that of Hal Huggins. After many years of much research & finding the time & money, I had TEN teeth removed, eight of which were root canals & the rest full of mercury almalgam fillings. I had extensive osteomyelitis throughout my jaw which was causing many health problems. As extreme as it sounds, I believe this is the only way to get rid of the problem. It is also necessary to go on a supervised detox program to get rid of the heavy metals if you have had almalgam fillings removed. My teeth were removed & my mouth restored by Dr. Franklin Ward in Orlando FL but there are others who know the protocol. I suggest people read "It's All in Your Head' by Dr.Hal Huggins & research the web for more information. Incidentally,I have been a Raw Foodist now for 18 months & have never felt better. I've lost 50lbs and have loads of energy. What have you got to lose other than fat & toxins! Wishing you all the best of health & good luck on your life journey. 7

How timely that this should arrive in my inbox. I just had my bottom right molar pulled 2 days ago. This was a root canal done in 2000 which never cleared up. It was on the meridian for lungs and intestines and I have had serious problems with both ever since the root canal. I hope that having the tooth removed will help my health

I would definitly improve your diet ASAP -- it has long been known that dental health and strong immune system go hand in hand. Dental decay is a sign of systemic decay and onset of disease. I had several crowns done and in the subsequent years got sicker and sicker over time. I suffered from many immune disorders that were life threatening. On my journey to heal myself I discovered that the food supply has changed and toxins are everywhere. I found Nutritional Cleansing and have reclaimed my health and my life. I have never felt better. Don't contact me unless you want a solution. 360-693-7711. It takes a whole lot more than lemon juice or other old school cleansing to deal with systemic infections like this or dealing with the toxic burden our body's are exposed to.

20 years ago I read a book "It's All In Your Head" I can not remember the Dentist that wrote it. I do know he was jailed and treated with scorn by the American Dental Assoc. I gave several of the books for gifts and received deep appreciation. I will be 70 years young in Oct. no root canals & no silver fillings and in great health. I take no meds and eat healthy fresh organic veggies and foods. Not perfectly all the time which is why I also cleanse at the cellular level and drink very healthly shakes twice a day.

When you receive a root canal, consider it temporary. At some point, maybe years later, this completely DEAD tooth will just break. When this happened to me, not only did I pay a princely sum for the root canal years ago, I paid 2500.00 (in 2005) for a bridge! a healthy tooth is a living, functional member of the body, no less important than any other part and depends on blood and fluids to be nourished, just like any other part. Even the jaw sufferes over time when blood can't circulate through the teeth. The answer really is in the food we eat - it has to be whole and of top quality. Don't settle for less. How much processed food is acceptable for health? That's like asking me how many beers you can drink before it affects your driving!

I got sicker and sicker after a nickel-beryllium-aluminum (under porcelain) cosmetic bridge with post and core (same alloy) was placed into a tooth with root resorption and an extraction site that failed to heal in my mandible seven months after extraction. The metal from the post and core started leaching into my jawbone (because the tooth had root resorption) and caused pain and swelling. I think nickel-beryllium-aluminum alloys are far more dangerous than metallic mercury because these metals are a direct carcinogen than can cause and/or exacerbate bone lymphoma (and osteosarcoma). Because my dentist refused to remove the bridge, I went to a holistic dentist. But I have found that unfortunately, holistic dentists do not rule out bone lymphoma (which can mimick chronic osteomyelitis) and make the blanket assumption that all lesions in the jawbone are benign. I spent $17K removing all my healthy top teeth (all mercury-free, three were root canalled, and I had no other root canals) by a holistic dentist who told me that my maxilla and mandible were filled with chronic osteomyelitis, he was unable to make me a proper fitting denture and I had to make my own, and no osteomyelitis was found in his biopsy reports. So, before you go through extreme and expensive dental procedures, have your holistic dentist confirm their diagnosis with a biopsy before treatment. After pulling all my top teeth, he told me that the mandible looked cancerous, but then added that of course it was not, and wanted me to pay him $3400 to clean out all the "benign" lesions in the mandible and another $11,000 to extract the the rest of the teeth in the mandible, which were all healthy. I declined for many reasons (including the advice of Dr. Robert Kulacz) and am using raw foods, sauna detox, an alkaline diet, and vitamin D to heal these lesions. Many holistic dentists also misinterpret the pathology reports they receive from Dr. Jerry Bouquot, who is not allowed to diagnose any patient outside of the state of Texas. They will tell you that myelofibrosis or reactive fibrosis in the jawbone confirms a diagnosis of "osteomyelitis" when it is actually usually linked to bone lymphoma: http://tinyurl.com/l952xm

Correction: the bridge and post and core were placed into a tooth with root resorption and OVER an extraction site that failed to heal . . . . I should also add that the nickel bridge, post and core and the unhealthy tooth with root resorption were removed prior to seeing the holistic dentist, at a free dental clinic.

9 years ago I had root canal treatment and have had regular infections in that tooth ever since. I never went back to the dentist to get the tooth removed because I feared more problems (there had been many following treatment and I developed a bit of a phobia!). I'm now 33 and have led a healthy lifestyle of good diet and regular exercise, but last year I began experiencing health problems and have been diagnosed with sensory neuropathy. I'm undergoing tests to find out the cause....I think it's time to have the tooth removed. Food for thought indeed!

I have had many root canal work done and several gold crowns put in. I am not sure why dentists do root canal fillings as within approximatelt 4-5 years the tooth has to be removed. During this time one never feels 100%. Now I know why!! Optimum nutrition does help however, but if you are stressed and your adrenal's are fatigued thendon't have dentistry work done!

As someone who suffered from an inflammatory reaction to anything that wasn't 100% organic (the reaction was red swollen eyes that would last for several weeks plus severe fatigue), I can assure you that root canals are an issue. Within two months of having the two offending teeth extracted, the health issue completely cleared. And this was after having suffered for almost two years to the point that there were months I could not work (I am a professional speaker -a little difficult to get up on stage with zero energy and very swollen eyes!) The challenge was convincing my dental surgeon to actually remove the teeth. He thought I was completely crazy of course. Very surprised when I reported the return of my health. Louisa from Toronto

What is causing your fatigue may be the same thing that caused you to need a root canal in the first place. A weakened immune system. This can be caused by lifestyle choices: poor nutrition, drugs/medications/alcohol, stress, etc. Eat foods that boost the immune system (like shiitake mushrooms) and eliminate drugs/(unnecessary)medications, alcohol and stress from your life. Raw milk has a cortisone (pre-cursor to cortisol)-like factor that is killed off by pasteurization, and ever since I started drinking raw milk, my morning cortisol levels have gone from 5 ng/mL's to 15.5 ng/mL's. If you have dental issues, including jawbone pathology, raw milk also contains calcium, vitamin D (diffentiates cancer cells - turns them into normal cells), vitamin C, vitamin K2 (used in medicine to treat cancer) and lots of good bacteria to fight off all the bad bacteria in the mouth. For vegans, natto (fermented soybeans) is a rich source of vitamin K2.

I have had rootcanals removed and amalgams removed and intravenous chelation therapy with intravenous vitamin c. I became much healthier. My 12 year old son had an accident and had a root canal done on his front lower tooth. He wet the bed every night whilst it was being done. This took many weeks. I insisted he see my biological dentist because I knew it was the root canal. I was thought of as crazy by my family. I took my son to this dentist nevertheless. My son had an extraction done and the dentist warned us that my son would wet the bed copiously that night. Exactly this happened and he has never wet it since. He is now 27 years old and still has the bridge the dentist fashioned out of my son's natural dead rootless tooth which was glued with white composite resin to his adjacent teeth.

What is the best root (ha ha) to go at this point???? I don't want a big space for all to see.

It is incredibly effective at addressing and correcting dental issues, particulary (I find) those to do with root canal issues. It is non-invasive and pain free. I have worked with several clients who did not realize it was a root canal issue until the program detected it and we used the dental panel to correct.

Bang on! I work with an "Integrative" dentist who specializes with "fixing" poorly done root canals...usually by replacing with implants. My wife had 1 redone and has gone from 3-4 headaches a week to 2-3 a month! What a relief for her (and for me)! Mercury filling removal is also his forte. I've had mine done and never realized the extreme danger with the removal process - he does the whole "nine yards" - masking, ventilating, vitamin C, charcoal capsules, etc. Also realize that the removed mercury, now that it's out of your body, is a BIOLOGICALLY HAZARDOUS MATERIAL - HAZMAT TEAM!! And must be disposed of properly. Yet it's safe in your mouth according to the FDA, ADA and CDA - go figure?

I have to comment on Roy Warner's inaccurate point that a tooth with a root canal is a completely dead tooth. It actually still has a periodontal ligament which not only has a live nerve, but an active blood supply as well. As long as a root canal is done well, it is a perfectly safe treatment and to consider extracting all root canalled teeth is extreme.

I had a root canal done approx 5 years ago. That tooth is now almost black. :-S Food constantly gets caught UNDER that tooth. I believe my mouth is a terrible breeding ground for bacteria. :-( I'm not sure what to do? Do I go to a dentist and ask them to remove the tooth that had the root canal? Do I ask a dentist to "fix" the root canal? I have no idea what needs to be done. But I do know I need help soon - I've been sick a lot lately (I never normally get sick) and my gut instinct tells me it's because of this rotten root canal tooth!!

Soooo....I recently had a root canal and now Im thinking hmmm.. what should I do? Im a naturalist as much as I can be here in suburbia.Organic and natural foods and body products are all we buy. We eat raw fruits and veggies and whole grain breads and baking mixes. Im kind of freakin out! Thinking I should try a sugar free diet. One of mine and my husbands focus is offering our children a lifestyle that will give them whole body wellness... soo... what now?

I had one root canal done 23 years ago, and two others about 12 years ago. All were properly restored with the recommended crowns. No problems since. None. Be very wary of removing perfectly good, properly functioning teeth, just because some root canals don't work out well.

I had amalgam fillings since i was about 8 years old,had those removed a few years ago, also had a root canal around age of 18 then around age 26 started getting very ill food allergies skin conditions fatigued weak immune system, allergic to molds, have tried many herbs and natural products which have helped some lucky i am still here but still very ill,i suspect the root canal could have something to do with me not being able to recover, are there any dentists in cleveland ohio that are able to remove infected root canals.

Was using a dentist who had plenty of fun paying his mortgage with my treatments because I had 100% coverage. He left a file in my root cannal, which was found 6 years later after many health problems. Arthritis, back pain, lumps in my wrists, headaches, swollen knees, shoulder pain, it goes on and on, infection draining into my sinus and loss of bone nausea/vomitin. After an apectomy all my symptoms dissapeared within a week or so. Yes! good health for a year or so until two dental inplants were done. My symptoms are all comming back. I am in the process of finding a good dentist. Looking at Dr. Colpitts in Tulsa. Does any one know or can give me any advice?

I did go to Dr. Colpitts and was quite impressed. I found out that my problem was not my dental implants but one other old infected root cannal. Had it removed a couple days ago and already feel better. My shoulder and hip pain have already diminished considerably. About Dr. Colpitts and his staff, I would highly recomend. They do great work and look not only at your mouth but see the relationship between the mouth and your health.

Reading all the comments I think you should all read Dr Weston A Price's foundational book, "Nutrition & Physical Degeneration" or check out the Weston Price Foundation online. If you have cavities you have a systemic problem probably caused by a modern diet of devitalised foods. Dr Price found that a change to a traditional diet of non processed foods including a large portion of animal fats including butter and eggs and cod liver oil could stop decay and I believe in some cases reverse the damage. Read his wonderful book. Oh and while you're at it buy Sally Fallon's sensational cook book: Nourishing Traditions based on Weston Prices findings.

My dentist advised me to have a root canal procedure, but I am afraid that the procedure might result in complications. I am environmentally sensitive and highly allergic to mercury and many other substances. I need to know what is a reasonable alternative to the root canal operation. Should I have the tooth pulled? If so, can it be replaced or will I just have to go the rest of my life without a tooth? What are my options? Where can I go to contact a qualified dentist with respect to my problem? Is a local dentist trustworthy in removing a tooth or helping me with this problem? Dennis L. Palmer evangelical_sdb@yahoo.com (214) 828-1950

These comments are comforting as I had a root-canal tooth, done many years ago, pulled out yesterday. I live in Australia and used an experienced biological dentist. The tooth was giving me no trouble at all, but I'd been researching dental health and prefer to take preventative action rather than wait for my immune system to give up the ghost... blood tests had showed my red and white blood cell counts perilously low. I'm 57. The non-troublesome tooth when pulled proved to be badly infected.... dentist showed me - it was BLACK inside and broke to pieces whilst being removed. I have also had all of my amalgams (7) replaced as I have high levels of mercury in hair & blood tests. Although I've not had serious health issues, I believe I'm looking forward to having more energy and a healthier future than if I'd kept the tooth and amalgams.
