Hi
Sounds delicious thanks for the info.
Couple of things you may wish to know...

Maca powder should not be taken by people who are pregnant or trying to be so perhaps a warning would be helpful

Agave syrup is not a healthy [alternative to] natural sweetners. It has similar properties to High Fructose corn syrup. Here's a link if this is of interest http://www.westonaprice.org/modernfood/HFCSAgave.pdf
Please let people know that this is not a healthy option

Keep up the great newsletters
Thanks, Jo

I have read that Maca has been shown to increase fertility, so I am confused by "Anonymous," comment. Also, on the shake, should we keep or throw out the water we have soaked the almonds in.

Is the rice cooked first or is it straight out of the packet?
Elle commented on 08-Jul-2009 10:21 PM4 out of 5 stars
Always throw out the water you soak nuts/seeds in, and rinse well! I agree with comment on agave syrup, its a marketing hoax...and now for question...anybody with sensitive digestive system, does the food combining not cause trouble?

Which type of blender is recommended to whip this smoothie properly????

Sounds like a great smoothie... but i have something a lot easier giving you the same zing!, blend scoops of your favorite reliv products with 320mls of chilled water, one banana & some ice for a taste sensation!

The Vita-Mix Blender is the best for Smoothie's and all jobs.

Why would you allow a forum of discussion to comment on, and debate 'facts' about your smoothie? People who read this are looking for advice on a healthier decision in life from others who are better educated than themselves on such topics. To display 'opinions' (including opposing viewpoints from anonymous people) is irresponsible. I love "foodmatters" as a movie and as a movement and I agree with everything that is stated in both, but don't let your site turn into a "back'n'forth" between anyone with an opinion on what's healthy. It destroy's your credibility. Cheers.

Yes Mary, Maca is excellent for fertility, I am a sworn witness to that. I've been super dosing with Maca, and my wife and I are 3 months pregnant and we've been trying for 12 yrs.

I pick blueberries, freeze them unwashed, rinse when I take them out, put frozen in regular blender with over ripe banana, and throw in different fruits, strawberries, cantelope, even carrots or pecans, with a little ice and milk, blend till smooth and drink, my 1 yr and 4 yr old grand children love them and I do not add sugar, sometimes add monavie for a larger variety of fruits in it, great stuff.
Will try this recipe too

discard soaking water from the almonds-they are soaked to get rid of the sprouting inhibiting factors
Becky commented on 09-Jul-2009 03:44 AM5 out of 5 stars
This sounds very good, but I can not use Barley or Wheat anything. Any other suggestions?
Philip Hurd commented on 09-Jul-2009 07:26 AM5 out of 5 stars
The recipe sounds great except for the ice. Really cold drinks tend to impede the digestion process. It is a shock to the stomach. These are ayurvedic recommendations.
Healthpioner commented on 09-Jul-2009 10:38 AM5 out of 5 stars
how is that with these smoothies?
A blender cuts fine all the fruits, herbs and vegies.
But than we drink it without shewing it in or mouth and starting the first step of the disgesting.
Wil the food be ready before it reaches the stomach?
Is it mabe better we first spit our own mouthliqueds in the blender and give so the whole blend the chance to ripen before drinking and let entering the stomach??

@Anne James there's no rice in this recipe.

I've been wondering about combining nut milks with fruit. Can you comment a bit more on the food combining aspect of that?

Thanks for the links outside the USA, I'm checking out the Australian one right now :-)

I have learned from this...everyone is going to have something to say whether they agree with the ingredients or find something wrong with the combination of food choice in the smoothie. We are all critics and some of us think we know all the answers...who really does? I have found that know matter what book or website you read info doesn't always match up. One thing I have learned is a healthy body goes along with a healthy mind. None of this health stuff will matter if your thoughts aren't healthy!

I have the FoodMatters movie. I like it and have loaned it out. I also enjoy your newsletter. Thank you.
Donna Miller commented on 10-Jul-2009 07:32 PM5 out of 5 stars
@Mary throw out the water you soaked the almonds in. It contains a sprout inhibitor that many people find hard to digest. I have always wondered about this and just found out from a David Wolfe video.
Donna Miller commented on 10-Jul-2009 07:36 PM5 out of 5 stars
I agree with Lachlan Hooper. From these comments it's obvious lots of people have questions, and it would be useful to have comments enabled if someone from FoodMatters answered those questions, but it doesn't look like you do. So people end up answering or stating their opinions, which may or may not be the best advice.
Healthpioner commented on 10-Jul-2009 10:29 PM5 out of 5 stars
whats wrong on that? The whole idea with internet is that we learn something from each other. Everyone who is agains that stays better of the net.

Although the Vitamix would be faboulous (as would the Blendtec)...but for Canadians to buy these 2 its almost $500 by the time you have it shipped..pay duty, taxes etc! OUCH!!!!
So there's got to be another couple of options? Anyone use a good blender that won't cost as much as my stove???!!!
Leslie commented on 18-Jul-2009 01:09 AM5 out of 5 stars
We use a Magic Bullet from Costco every day for a morning shake and if you go easy on it, don't overfill and skip the ice cubes, it works like a charm. Very affordable.
Healthpioner commented on 20-Jul-2009 03:45 AM5 out of 5 stars
you don't need a vitamix.
Buy the kenwood with a tap on the bottomside.
The tap is so convenient that you never want to use any other blender.
The Kenwood cost only 85,- €

Good point on drinking the smoothies does any
food you eat need to be masticated and mixed
with saliva first? I went mad on fruit smoothies last
year and found after a while I got bad heart burn
from eating things like onions, porridge etc that
I was ok with before.

Raw organic almonds have been known not to be so healthy as they may have been irradiated during transport. Full truck loads coming from California have been known to irradiate so extensively that the driver must disembark during irradiation...not to mention other food items? Please make sure that you verify your source for these as there has been lot of controversy of late among raw foodists. In the meantime, enjoy the raw adventure, it rocks!
Gina commented on 01-Nov-2009 05:47 AM5 out of 5 stars
Jaffy Brothers has organic nuts gauranteed no to be irradiated.

HI YOUR SYOER SMOOTHIE DRINK IS GREAT< HOWEVER THE BANANA MIXED WITH YOUR OTHER INGREDIENTS WILL CAUSE THE FOODSTUFFS IN YOUR STOMACH TO BECOME VERY ACIDIC, BECAUSE CERTAIN FRUITS (ESPECIALLY STARCHY BANANAS WILL ACIDIFY WITH OTHER FOODS IN STOMACH. i ALWAYS EAT FRUIT ON AN EMPTY STOMACH HALF AN HOUR BEFOR MEALS OR TWO HOURS AFTER. tHIS WILL CAUSE PUTRICICATION AND THAT IS NOT VERY GOOD FOR YOU. PROPER FOOD COMBINING IS SOMETHING SOO IMPORTANT AND SO FEW OF US DO NOT KNOW THIS.

OMG ppl, "the wise seek the council of many" We're all different and what works for one may not for another, so I love reading EVERYTHING!! What should be stated to the commentators is to remember that even their comments are not iron clad cures so be respecful of all comments.

I am gluten sensitive. Can I use anything other than Barley or Wheat grass? Raw spinach maybe?
Laurie commented on 05-Aug-2011 03:06 AM5 out of 5 stars
Banana's are also high glycemic so if you are diabetic it may not be the best choice of fruit. :) I usually use berries. Most smoothies you can be very creative you can make them as healthy or as unhealthy as you want - do what works for you and what tastes
good to you! ;) If you want healthy stick with low glycemic food choices if you don't care go hog wild! haha.

You can't actually buy TRULY raw organic almonds from the States anymore. After some outbreak in 2004 I think it was all almonds need to be pasteurized. Only European almonds are truly raw. In regards to the agave nectar comment: the clearer the agave
the less it has been processed. Ojio makes a truly raw agave nectar. Smoothie looks delicious btw.
